Fecking Adobe Illustrator 10 Bastard

fecking illustrator

I hateIllustrator, specifically 10 as thats what im using. At the moment im cutting up paths and i get the above dialog if i miss the beizer point with the minus path tool. It then takes 2 clicks of the OK button to get rid of the bastard! Why?!Just fucking dont do anything, dont irritate me with unnecessary dialogs which get in the way of my workflow.

/rant over

rant pt 2
...And another thing! The toolbar is never there when I open Illustrator, I have to keep doing Window->Tools.

I'm not liking the way that when Photoshop CS starts up, it sits around doing nothing for several seconds before it'll let you do anything.

And as for Version Cue, don't even get me started...

  2. 8235 Jon Hicks 2004-10-10 22:51:50

I so know this feeling. It doesn't get any better in CS I'm afraid...

  3. 8237 Paul D 2004-10-11 04:07:11

Illustrator CS isn't any better. Whenever I close a file, there's a 50% chance of the program crashing. I end up having 20 files open because I don't want to interrupt my progress and lose my settings.

I've also had a problem with paths pasted from Photoshop. It seems they corrupt the Illustrator file, making that layer and every layer above it (!) disappear when the file is re-opened. Of course, I never found that out the first time until I'd spent 5 hours on one particular file.

Illustrator: the only program that gets *worse* with each new version.

  4. 8239 Patrick Bennett 2004-10-11 14:51:05

Funny that you say these things don't get better in CS... when in fact they do. The tools pallete bug was a documented one in Illustrator 10. This has been fixed in CS. Also, new in CS is the ability to turn off annoying error messages like the one that prompted this post! Both problems solved. I love Illustrator CS and have not seen any of the stability problems noted here.

Now, I don't work for Adobe or anything... in fact I hate that even today, most professionals still design web sites using Photoshop.

That program just doesn't seem suited to the task. There's no pixel perfect placement by just typing in x and y values, or width and height in a transform palette. Resizing elements is destructive. Selecting a number of different elements is ridiculously annoying as you have to link them in the layers palette when in Illustrator you can just shift-click on them. The list could go on and on. Doesn't anyone else think that Illustrator is vastly superior for professional web design?

  5. 8240 Matthew 2004-10-11 14:55:25

I tend to use fireworks for web graphics and flit between freehand and illustrator for print graphics. We dont have Illustrator or Photoshop CS but sure the tool and warning dialogs for 10 are worthy or a patch.
I preferred Freehand up to about version 8/9 but now I think theyre both pretty bloated and heinous.
I wouldnt use Illustrator for web graphics as I dont think I could get my head around using vector software for bitmap work.

  6. 8241 Jason B. 2004-10-12 18:04:25

I know the frustration of this as well. I have to zoom in 6 million percent to avoid it.

Patrick - How do you go about disabling the error messages? I see nothing in the Illustrator CS "Preferences" to do this. Where else do I need to look?

    Thanks.

Doesn’t anyone else think that Illustrator is vastly superior for professional web design?

Uhm, no not me. Illustrator is great to get positioning right but it doesn't allow the artistic creativity as Photoshop. A combination of the two apps is ideal imo.

Also, CS is such a heap of irreliable crap that I simply reverted to 10. Actually, I had to return to 10 because CS kept crashing on startup. Tried all the meagre troubleshooting available on the Adobe forums but no go. And indeed, in CS you can disable the error messages but I can't remember where.

Doesnâ??t anyone else think that Illustrator is vastly superior for professional web design?

Yes, me! I find it much easier to work in. It's more fluid. There are symbols so I can make duplicates of elements and replace them easily later.

Then I bring them all into Photoshop to slice and export. It's the best way to work.

Just remember to break outlines before you bring text from Illustrator into Photoshop or they'll look faint. I don't know why this happens but it's a minor workflow hiccup.

  9. 8261 paul 2004-10-17 22:35:12

hit tab to get yer tools quickly.

  10. 8263 Victor Nystad 2004-10-18 22:03:04

Actually, Patrick, you can type in exact coordinates in Photoshop CS (don’t know about previous versions), and even dimensions in pixels. Just select your object, hit command+T (or control if your on Windows), then control-click (right-click) the percentage character in the width and height text-field and change it to “px”. I use Photoshop as my main tool for designing webpages, but tend to use vectorshapes and layerstyles more than pixelbased objects because it’s more flexible.
The main thing that annoys me with Illustrator is that you can’t position strokes on the inside of an object, as you can with Photoshop and even InDesign.

  11. 8268 Matthew 2004-10-21 10:15:21
hit tab to get yer tools quickly.

Actually, I just tried that and it doesnt work. The palettes dissapear then when you hit tab again they appear with still no sign of the tools palette,

  12. 8313 arloss 2004-10-30 17:02:30

Why don't you try deleting you illustrator cs pref files..this will get your tools back..

i need a serial key for the Adobe Illustrator 10 with Patch.
anyone could be so generous to send me the key ?

  14. 8573 matthew 2005-02-06 11:54:21

    Err, NO

  15. 8671 ron matt 2005-03-02 08:44:03

as far as the premiere adobe apps is concerned, alot of the problems could be solved if you "Saved" on a regular interval. I can't imagine losing 5 hours work if you're managing your work properly.
Anyway, what else can we use, Freehand? Get serious. Plus intergrating Photoshop with Ill. and In Design is what Adobe is all about regardless of what versions we use. If Photoshop doesn't work well for you in Flash, maybe you should give a look at Swish.

RM (I love everything, NO PROBLEMS)

  16. 8684 Bill 2005-03-05 03:56:22

    Use "Tab" for tools
Use the "Shift/Tab" for tools and no palettes
With no palettes shwing use "shift/tab" for palettes and no tools (weird)

  17. 8690 Matthew 2005-03-08 09:52:47

Nope, doesnt work. Its official, Illustrator is a big pile of steaming dog turd,

  18. 8695 ronmatt 2005-03-08 19:21:18

for all you who have these problems with illustrator and photoshop
if you're on a MAC 'specially OS X that could be the real issue. I work on a MAC all day, nothing but these sort of problems. Got a PC at home, same software. absolutely no problems. I'm not one of those religious nuts that believe that either Jobs or Gates created the universe, I can work with either platform, but it just seems that working on a PC is smoother and more trouble free. For me anyway

  19. 8696 Matthew 2005-03-08 19:30:41
I’m not one of those religious nuts that believe that either Jobs or Gates created the universe

*HA!* I am, I believe Steve Jobs built the good bits of universe and Billy Gates is responsible for all the evil stuff - like hornets.

  20. 8697 ronmatt 2005-03-08 23:16:50

actually, hornets are not evil in the true sense of the word. hornets are merely confused and disillusioned bees. Now mr.gates may be responsible for a few deranged insects but none the less, photoshop, illustrator, in design, flash, 3d studio max, et al, do not seem to crash and burn in the evil universe he may or may not have created. meantime, i seem to be rebooting once an hour at work. I'd probably try linux if i really knew what the hell it was.if jobs is good and gates is evil then the linux guy must be a libertarian. HUH?

  21. 8702 derrick 2005-03-10 07:51:53

I need help because in AI 10 my tools palette is missing like half the tools does anyone know how I can fix this.

  22. 8703 ron matt 2005-03-10 09:01:16

ya know, I tried a bogus copy of illustrator 10 once. I got a crack and tried to replace the .exe with the one provided. Voila, some of my tools turned up missing. Other things were missing as well in other dropdown menus. I unloaded it and got a legal copy. no prob since. I neither know nor care if we're talking warez with your app. Theres a chance that simply re installing will solve the missing tool problem. These .dll's can and do get corrupted. This possible fix ain't rocket science but it could work and doesn't take much time out of your busy schedule.

  23. 8717 hsueh yuting 2005-03-13 05:07:07

to derrick about toold palette missing:
    1. Quit Illustrator.
    2. Delete the AIPrefs file from the following location:
    -- Windows 2000 and XP: Documents and Settings\[user profile]\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 10
    3. Restart Illustrator.

    plz refer the details here:

  24. 8600 Aaron 2005-03-16 04:06:53

Ok... I am in 8th grade and I think that Illustrator is one of the best progression in vector art and is also one of the most simplistic. The adobe imaging programs have some of the most customizable interfaces as well. It could be the Mac version is better n'less you use Macs and well then you are smoking some funny shit

  25. 8725 Fejack 2005-03-16 19:47:38

I've been using Illustrator until one year ago. For the kind of work I do, I often need to play with gradients, textures and colors filters. I experimented with the latest version of Corel Draw, which was lightyears ahead of Illustrator.

Here are a few things I could not do on Illustrator which Corel can effortlessly:

    * Save a multi-page Adobe PDF document.
    * Do no-nonsense boolean path operations.
    * Apply textures.
    * Map bitmap textures.
    * Use dynamic filters.
    * Apply filters to bitmaps.

As far as I'm concerned, Illustrator is history.

  26. 8726 ronmatt 2005-03-16 20:16:05

You'll be back, wait 'till your service bureau or printer notifies you that your docs won't open or the transparancy won't transcribe to postscript and the images or fonts aren't properly embedded.
If you doing things for the web, coreldraw is fine, but not really dependable for pitstop preflighting and imposition apps like Preps.
then again, if your only interested in images for screen, then take a look at REAL DRAW 3.5 . It's vector and raster together. It has some great features, plus it's only $55....

  27. 8727 Matthew 2005-03-16 20:33:52

I was tempted to point out similar points, but CorelDraw! I mean, isnt CorelDraw to Illustrator like PageMaker or MS Publisher compared with Quark (admittedly not the most stable of apps) or InDesign (the new kid in town with which Ive had little experience).

Anyway, I much prefer Freehand, pre version 9 that is, before they started copying the Illustrator UI foibles like multiple cursors rather than easy key commands. Freehand was great with one cursor for selecting an item then hold alt to select within a group or points in a bezier curve now its just so cumbersome.

  28. 8729 ronmatt 2005-03-17 00:34:08

First, Pagemaker should be condemned and Publisher is a cartoon.
Quark is very good, and has a track record. In Design is my weapon of choice. It's got a sweet interface and is far more intuitive than Quark. Not to mention it's [Illustrator like] features such as transparancy and text on a path. But don't try to make PDF's directly out of it. They don't work well. Save as an EPS and distill using Acrobat 4, 1.3 PDF profile. A RIP see's that pretty good. I agree with you about Freehand. I also think that the best Illustrator was 8. although I have the Adobe Creative Suite, I prefer Photoshop 7, Illustrator 8 or [9 if I need transp.]. I send about 300 pages a month to various printers and SB's, and never have any problems at all with these apps. For illustration, I'm a Photoshop advocate. I've been working with it since 1.3 and if your settings are 300dpi or higher, it can't be beat. I only am concerned with vector for text, I get that with In Design so I very seldom open Illustrator or Freehand anymore.

I am using illistraror 10, sadly somehoe when I go; window > swatch libraries, they dont display in the menu as brush, style and symbols does.

I went into my application folders open illustraror folder, then presets
and all the pantone libraries are there but the dont display in the menu when i am running the application. ( i am using a mac-computer)

    please somebody

    gracias

how do you print in adobe illusrator 10? when i print it comes out in the top left hand corner and i can't centralise it. i also cannot find the print preview. when i ctrlA all that it selects is the illustration itself and drags it off the artboard! very very very frustrating.

  31. 8862 Foamcow 2005-04-11 10:27:57

The issue with Illustrator not loading pallettes properly is possibly down to available memory when it was launched.

If you have a ton of apps open and they are hogging your memory then Illustrator has the lovely habit of just not loading some parts of itself. It doesn't think that you will mind though so it doesn't bother to tell you about it.

As far as I can remember it's been like this since V7.

Not sure if that's your problem. I use it regularly on OSX and have only had the problem once.

  32. 8863 Matthew 2005-04-11 11:16:33

Nope, does it every time whatevers open. Ive got 2gig of ram so memory shouldnt be an issue. Adobe have just gone up shit creek in a canoe with no paddles lately.

  33. 8871 foamcow 2005-04-11 22:52:53

Ahh, the basic requirement for Illustrator is 3Gb of RAM ;-)

  34. 9064 ChiMuffins 2005-05-26 21:22:00

Okay, I have an Adobe Illustrator serial, but it keeps telling me I'm entering it wrong. There's a way to do it...How is that?

  35. 9071 Matthew 2005-05-30 01:30:42

    Try Adobe.

  36. 9072 foamcow 2005-05-30 11:31:20

You need to enter it exactly as written.
    Try contacting Adobe.

    Or else try this one....

    OMG-WTF-111-HAX-STFU-N00B-!!1-;-)

    See if that works.

  37. 9108 Kitla Katby 2005-07-06 05:03:50

The flipped character and paragraph palette disappeared, though a check mark appears showing it is selected.

It used to work, then one day decided not to.

    Adobe is not user friendly.

  38. 9243 jimbo 2005-09-15 07:22:49

Illustrator has lots of stupid, stupid bugs. We keep buying it, so Adobe doesn't bother fixing it.

The problem with anchor and control point handles being so unforgivingly small can be helped, even in 10 though: turn on smart guides (ctrl-U) and it will both show you what point is selected and 'snap' to the nearest point, path, etc.

It's annoying to have on all the time, but I use it whenever I have to do fine fiddling.

Adobe, why can't the damn handles be resizeable?!

  39. 9325 Kitla Katby 2005-11-16 04:16:19

Why does Illustrator ai open up as PDF files on other's computers, but opens up fine on mine.

  40. 9351 Kitla Katby 2005-11-28 19:24:45

Ever call Adobe and have someone dumb answer the phone? They sound super glad they can't help you. Losers!!!!
