A Musical Batton

The event of the century has been passed to me by Mallow user CeprixConception.

Total volume of music files on my computer:

12.99GB

The last CD I bought was:

I _really_ have no idea, I dont buy CDs often, the last iTunes store album I bought was Goldie Lookin Chain, Greatest Hits.

Song playing right now

Currently playing on our office jukebox is "Really Rappin' Something" by The Kleptones #

Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:

I usually listen on random so here goes
"Blue Flowers Revisited" by Dr Octagon
"Black Lodge" by Anthrax
"Remember Tomorrow" by Iron Maiden
"Swords in the Dirt" by Roots Manuva
"Song for the Sick" by Graham Coxon

Five people to whom I'm passing the baton:

Brendan
Chris
Tim
Greg
Sarah

Apologies if youve already had the baton passed onto you or youre not interested in these things.

When memes attack - Musical Baton

It appears this months fixation craze is passing a musical baton - go fig.

Out of nowhere I have had the “musical baton” passed to me (almost in unison) by matthew, phu and nima.

    So, here we go:

Total music files residing on my computer:...

It's the latest crazy sweeping the inkernet. Wonderful, no? :D

    lol, yeah.

WP 1.5.1 seems to be double trackbacking, or is it just me? I put CeprixConception's trackback url in the trackback field in WP as well as just letting WP do it itself and I seem to have done a double trackback. You also seem to have double trackbacked me, did you do the same?

Thing is, Im sure Ive done that before without this duplication.

Hmmm, my trackback is taking it's sweet time in coming though... I'd done it before a few months ago (wow! a trendsetter) but I figured a lot has changed in those 4 or so months...

  7. 9034 Sean 2005-05-18 19:07:23

I didn't have problems when sending trackbacks to other blogs. I'm also using WP 1.5.1, you know. It's weird...

  8. 9040 Chris 2005-05-21 17:03:48

    So far, 1.5.1 is doing okay...although, I fixed 1.5 BEFORE I placed 1.5.1 on my box, I can't tell a difference. lol...

  9. 9041 Matthew 2005-05-21 17:09:24

Me too, then I had to fix the RSS thing with 1.5.1 and now theres a 1.5.1.1 http://wordpress.org/development/2005/05/one-five-one/
Ive not gone for 1.5.1.1 yet though

I've found running the SVN versions easier. Stability isn't too bad. The bonus is gremlins like the RSS feed issue get plugged fairly quickly.

  12. 9045 Chris 2005-05-22 02:37:21

Brendan, do you load the svn versions automatically, or what?

  13. 9049 patrick 2005-05-23 07:39:58

Dr. Octagon - Great choice. Octagonecologyst is a classic album.

    A musical baton

Ok been sent this from Matt but what the hell, may as well do it:
Total volume of music files on my computer
    7.50GB
The last CD I bought was
Athlete’s new album “Tourist” as a birthday present but the last album I bought for myself...

  15. 9047 Brendan 2005-05-23 10:13:49

    Chris,

I run an SVN update bash script. I don't automatically run the update, but can trigger it at will.

  16. 9050 Matthew 2005-05-23 10:37:55

Is there some sort of walkthrough as to how to do that?

  17. 9051 Chris 2005-05-23 15:24:35

I've seen it on the Codex, but I've never read about it. I was thinking of creating a blog on the backside of spider just to see how the development comes along...I'd like to automate the entire thing though.

  18. 9052 Matthew 2005-05-23 15:34:49

Hmm, I had a quick look on the codex for svn and upgrade, nothing seems obvious.

Anyone have a hand walkthough? I saw this on Matts site btw, but it means nothing to me. Oh, and this but Im still none the wiser.

Itd be nice to have little _Upgrade_ button in the WP admin panel.

  19. 9053 Matthew 2005-05-23 16:06:50

ahh, I got svn listing with svnx and subversion
    http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?keywords=svn&os=macosx

    I do that sometimes.

SVN is a beast - but pretty easy to drive.

SVN is available for a large number of platforms, however a mac or *nix/ linux based environment will help.

While a GUI is useful, it won't mean much as most SVN based softwares tend to list the bash/cmd line syntax, getting familiar with that will help

The easiest way I've found, is to perform the following (having access to a mac or linux box helps with SVN - learning to drive a bash or similar console is always a good plan):

    svn co http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/trunk/

.. to get a copy of the subversion wordpress tree. From there, transfer across the non-default plugins, theme, etc from one's existing wordpress install (let it overwrite anything in the SVN copy, but do try to only copy theme or plugin files not already provided).

    From there a simple:

    svn update

.. run within the base folder of the wordpress install will keep the SVN tree up to date. Keep that in sync with the live copy, or run SVN from within ones live web hosted blog (there are quite a few php snippets around that can execute bash commands) will keep it fresh. Don't delete the .svn directories as they keep a running log of updates - SVN will fail if they are all removed.

I would never recommend using a chron job to keep it up to date however - better to use a password protected php file to trigger the update.

It's true bullshit that one needs to be a gun ace, or SVN guru - the whole point of SVN is that it's a helluva lot easier to drive and more secure over CVS. However, it is important to understand that the SVN tree is bleeding edge - it has sharp edges that may cause injury or can break one's blog.

A simple understanding of what the basic SVN commands do, coupled with the understanding of what "development" means is all that's required.

It occurs to me I should have blogged this & sent a ping or trackback - perhaps I will. :)

Cheers, Ill try and take that in at some point. It seems as I cant ssh my host its all irrelevant anyway.
