I'm going to have to write a plugin for this. The dev team know it's a problem but due to a determination to retain control of re-write rules within wordpress it's never going to be fixed. It's almost funny to observe how much new shit is likely to go into 3.0, yet half the broken shit will remain broken.
WP used to be known for it's simple, working approach - sure, it wasn't that pretty - but it worked. Now it's being pimped as the "bells and whistles" solution. It's just a shame half the bells don't work..
