The iPod is 5 years old today! Uneasy Silence has a video of it's 'birth'.
I this a stupid idea? 'diggthisdesign' - a sort of digg but where people submit and 'digg' website designs rather than links. Or maybe it already exists?

Bad idea?

Ive had a tweak of my RSS feeds (mainly because I'd discovered a problem with my current feeds, thanks Brendan) and added Brendan's sig2feed plugin and Steve Smith's Feedburner plugin. This now means that anyone using my regular feed gets redirected to my FeedBurner feed. Ive added some bells and whistles courtesy of FeedBurner - basically my 3 recent Flickr pictures and a daily synopsis of my de.icio.us posts. If you dont like these trinkets just post a comment complaining and Ill happily remove them as I know not everyone appreciates this stuff. Meanwhile, the Atom feed should remain unchanged.

Anyone interested in scifi and podcasts should have a look at Escape Pod - which does sci fi shorts; and Podiobooks - which serialises books into podcasts, and not all of them scifi.

Google Reader

When I had a look at various online feed readers about 8 months ago I dont think Google’s Reader even existed - it’s certainly not been particularly useable up until a few weeks ago.

Google Reader is far more user friendly now, with a clear layout and a clever AJAX (Im guessing) trick where it marks posts as read as you scroll through them. Theres also a neat little bookmark bar ‘Next »’ button which Ive been using a lot lately. It steps you through your unread posts from post to post in the actual web browser, viewing the original site, rather than formatted by and in the feed reader - which is nice.

I just wish I could use it in combination with NetNewsWire in the same way that I do with NewsGator, as I dont think I could move entirely away from NetNewsWire. I tried it with FeedLounge and whilst that is, Id wager, the best web based reader out there, it does cost money and I still had to go back to NetNewsWire after a few months using FeedLounge.

So come on Google and NetNewsWire developers - work together.

Original image on Flickr.

Not that I ever used it after signing up, but it takes a surprising number of clicks to cancel a MySpace account.

Goodbye MySpace

Great corner at the start of this video of the 2006 Chinese GP.
I think Greenpeace's new campaign "Green my Apple" is somewhat misguided. I sincerely hope theyre not targeting Apple just because it makes a good headline in the media.

Yes, again!

I have spruced up the design again. This time its no major layout change, just a lightening of the colours.

What? Again?

Started by Jon Hicks, when will the madness end?

Maybe where will the madness end?” is more appropriate

Newsvine.

One more.

My Steam worries are over. After sending a few cantankerous emails to Steam support and eventually sending multiple pictures of my HL2 e1 disk with cd-key and receipt theyve removed it from my Steam account.

Steam go bye bye

Ever since I got my new new iPod its refused to work with iPhoto, it just threw -50 errors back at me. I discovered that it was fine if I created a new Library, but no amount of rebuilding the Library (open iPhoto with command+option held to see the options) would make it work. Ive finally relented and started from scratch, throwing away my old Library and importing it afresh into iPhoto. Seems to be fine so far, but Ive lost all my custom Albums.

Follow the Apple special event (pics). Hopefully the video will work soon.

Looks like some nice iPod/iTunes updates and new features thus far.

Highlights so far:

  • Each iPod has its capacity doubled
  • Extra battery life
  • Colours
  • iTunes 7
  • Games for iPods (inc 5g iPod)
  • Coverflow-a-like view in iTunes
  • Higher res movies
  • Synch iPod between multiple computers
  • Cover art downloadable for any track.
  • Various movie stuff, but hopefully international in 2007, until then its US only.
  • Apple is releasing its long-rumored set-top box in Q1 2007. It will be Wireless
  • I want to reset my Half-Life Episode 2 key so I can pass it on to a friend. How complicated is it?! It also seems I have to login through the WIndows program to do anything with my account. No web access apparently. Also, the link to find my lost account does not tell me anything about that! Games publishers - this shit is not acceptable! No-wonder people download pirate copies and install hacks. I would happily buy a game then just download a hack to avoid this Steaming shit. BTW, I managed to contact Steam about this, but yet to have a sensible reply.
An Open Challenge to David Maynor and Jon Ellch. Hack John Gruber's MacBook and it's theirs.

Snakes On A Plane is shit # ##, even the theme song is shit (though at least it has a funny parody).

Its set up like a 70s disaster movie with all the usual cliche characters climbing aboard for the ride, theres even Will Smith/Jayzee character, a Paris Hilton (though her dog does die in a kind of comedic way) and the main foil of the film is a Marky Mark-a-like.

Whilst there is a few amusing deaths and the film as a whole is fairly funny, its just not a good film. Watch it on DVD and save the cinema ticket for something for deserving like A Scanner Darkly.

Ive ordered one of these PRIE Ambassadors for my iPod, Im kinda bored with the iSkin style cases now.

I saw A Scanner Darkly last night. I wont spoil any surprises with much of a review (not that you’d expect a decent review from me anyway) just to say that about a quarter of the way through it was starting to loose me; by half way it had dragged me in; and by the end I wanted a half hour more at least. It certainly got everyone talking afterwards.

    Go watch.

Google recently updated theyre Google Notifier. It seems however that however many times I click 'Go to Inbox'' - it doesnt!
