Yesterday we concluded that all mobile phones are shit and this one is no exception. The industry has managed to pack an incredible about of technology into a small object, such that it would be indistinguishable from magic 20 years ago, and yet make the whole experience of using the thing more irritating than irritated bowel syndrome.- Pete Ashton reviews a 3mobile Skype phone.
Well, not quite yet maybe, but there seems to be a rush of free wifi. Wetherspoons, and McDonalds to name but 2. There is also TheCloud which whilst not entirely free, does seem to have started pricing itself somewhat sensibly if you have an iPhone (free with O2) or an iPod Touch (£3.99pm) whilst Pay-As-You-Go is still crazily expensive. Is this the end of outrageously priced wifi? I for one hope so. Hat tip.

This is the first recording with our new multi-channel Firewire desk and it was a very busy night so there could be some teething troubles. Apologies to anyone who came and signed up to play but didn’t get a chance to - there’s just not always time. Jon has also had to go in and mix the levels on the tracks which is why it’s taken a while to get these MP3s up live. Enjoy the music and we welcome feedback.

Yes, today is indeed iPhone Day UK. Was I the first to tweet this fact from my (soon to be ex-) mobile?
Fairly trouble free first night: power and Firewire lights are FAR too bright, unbelievably so; need a program with more simultaneous inputs, 8 into Garageband is not enough really; weird activity with Firewire into the desk, when playing iTunes from the Mac through the desk to the PA, after a while the audio is distorted and we have to turn the desk off and on the fix it.
On the plus side, the multi-channel magic is great (as can be seen here) we were able to play back a recording over the PA and turn off or on each track individually - much fun.
The only downside (for you listeners) is that the process or making it available on the site for download and play is now more complicated. Due to it being recording multitrack we have to fix the levels and whatnot before releasing it - which could take a few days.
So expect to see last night’s Open Mic up some time soon and come down to listen to Sarah Saville tonight and see the desk in action.

Yet another fun Open Mic night, very busy. The kick drum on Spiral Architects is a bit loud and the snare mic drops out a few times.
