Another good Open Mic Night, the band “Joby” particularly stood out. Also of note were Owen’s set, Angie’s songs and Dan’s Zappa rendition.
See you next Wednesday at The Fawcett Inn.
Pics up shortly.

Ive not had a chance to read up much on it yet, but of course I want an iPod touch. I also like the new look Nano despite there being some debate around about it looking 'chubby'.
So, iPod Touch or iPhone? It's certainly a tough decision: I'd like an iPhone but it's currently only 8gig and will of course come tethered with a phone contract; The iPod Touch is a nice proposition but it still means carrying a phone around and whilst 16gb isn't bad, it's not the 30gb I currently have. I'll have to wait a bit I guess.

Jon and I (Jon is the other member of the audio engineering team at The Fawcett) are looking at getting a nice Firewire mixer for.. well, not just the Open Mic Nights but for anything else which might come up but also just because it's got flashy lights and LEDs. We have so far decided in this Phonic Helix 12 which should allow each audio track to go as a separate track to Garageband for remixing, fixing levels, EQ etc later. So, if anyone has any experience with such setups and useful suggestions, please speak up. Thanks.
The Continentals, great blues. The first 2 songs are from the sound check. Original image on flickr.

Really, how does this kind of hokum ever make it onto TV?
Have our souls lived before? Do you believe in life after death? Have you ever met someone and been convinced you have met them in a previous life? ... Have I Been Here Before? offers celebrity guests the chance to see if they have lived before ... in a past life. The celebrities will be regressed by experienced therapist Andrea Foulkes, and in the process they often reveal some deeply intimate thoughts about their current lives.I can't see how it's any better than the 'psychic' TV channels.
Also, their video player (which appears to be Flash based) doesn't work on a Mac. What's with that?
Excellent night, Crossfire were very good. I’d recommend having a listen.

BioShock is a fantastic game; creepy, unsettling, atmospheric, amusing, fun, etc etc. I suggest anyone with an Xbox 360 go out and buy a copy forthwith.

"I had a meeting with my probation officer today and he told me that he has to install monitoring software onto my PC. No big deal to me; that is part of my sentence," he wrote on his Lost and Alone blog. "However, their software doesn't support GNU/Linux (Which is what I use). So, he told me that if I want to use a computer, I would have to use an OS that the software can be installed on." The monitoring software in question is only available for Microsoft Windows. Neither Linux nor a Macintosh running OS X would be an acceptable platform. #[Via]

And the "my rendering's better than your rendering" argument continues ..
The issue is reminiscent of the "I hate black bars on wide-screen films" brigade who believe that the film should be chopped, panned, scaled and otherwise distorted from the artists original intention simply so that it fits better on their display. #
The "Apple way" still makes far more sense to me, especially when you see the two side-by-side showing the odd relative scaling caused by the Microsoft philosophy. The Apple rendering enlarges the width proportionately to the height as you'd expect; whereas the Microsoft rendering seems to go up in blocks of 3, suddenly jumping to the next width whilst the height increases.
Legibility-wise, surely no-one claim say that the smaller sizes are more readable with MS's rendering than Apple's? People don't read letters, they read the whole shape of the word and for this Apple's smoother, somewhat softer rendering is far superior.

Firstly, a short note about this recording. This was recorded on the same day as I installed iLife 08 and with that the new Garageband, we also had plans to use Aggregate audio to record some ambient mics with an iMic, this didn’t quite work so we gave up on that and just recorded as usual. Unfortunately not all went to plan and it wasn’t entirely apparent until after the recording.
I have been using the left USB slot on my MacBook Pro for every recording so far, but for some reason it has now decided to have some sort of audio corruption when going form the mixing desk to the left USB. You hit record in Garageband and all looks fine until you stop the recording and play back. The recording mysteriously becomes half it’s length and also speeds up. Randomly clicking the “Follow Tempo & Pitch” box eventually sorts this but there’s a noticeable hiss in the recording (as can be heard in these). Switching to the right USB seems to fix both of these, however M-Audio apparently don’t recommend using the right USB on a MacBook Pro. The his is also noticeable when recording directly into Quicktime so I don’t think it’s a Garageband thing.
Even more confusingly, to try to isolate what exactly is happening I plugged the iMic into both USB connections. In the right USB you get an even louder hiss and in the left USB it’s fine.
The long and the short is that I’m now running the desk into the right-hand USB but if anyone has any explanations or suggestions I’d be grateful and whilst I am tempted to blame Garageband 08 it just seems too unlikely.
Anyway, here’s the recordings and sorry about the quality.

I've just installed iLife 08 on my Mac and besides a few scares with Garageband initially not installing - it's great. I now have a web gallery of my site designs which I have set to take every Monday using this fine little script. In the past it's just been emailing to my gmail account and being filed away under a tag as I didn't want to add too much rubbish to my Flickr account but this seems perfect. Even more so than that, the script emails the grab to .mac which then also syncs with iPhoto and adds the grab back into my iPhoto library. Wow! That also means that I can now have a gallery of random rubbish which I can add to by simply emailing.
These are recordings of the bands last night - Midnight Dance Party, The SLM and Black Fox. A few slight audio hitches again, it’s all a learning curve.
There’s even an iTunes podcast available for this, but it only shows the first of the files for each entry.

It seems that every post is a Fawcett Open Mic post these days. Well, not one to buck a trend here’s another. And if you’re one of the acts who played and have found this site looking for your mp3s - hello - and leave a comment with a link to your site if you have one.
It’s worth noting that we (Jonny and I on the sound, don’t think I’m doing all this myself) had a few issues with sound levels at the start. So with out further ado here’s Fresh from this Wednesday’s Open Mic at The Fawcett Inn, Fawcett Road, Southsea.
