Open Mic Night will be every 1st and 3rd Wednesday from July at The Fawcett Inn, Fawcett Road, Portsmouth, UK!

WordPress 2.5.1 is out.

Version 2.5.1 of WordPress is now available. It includes a number of bug fixes, performance enhancements, and one very important security fix. We recommend everyone update immediately, particularly if your blog has open registration. The vulnerability is not public but it will be shortly.

…and it’s still just as much of a pig as it ever was to upgrade yet we still get the upgrade now alerts and security hassles. The only 2 plugins I can find to hand, the creatively named “Wordpress Automatic Upgrade plugin” and “Instant Upgrade plugin for WordPress”: The first refuses to reactivate my plugins meaning I have to print-to-preview the plugins screen then go through reactivating them (please let me just disable the pointless plugin deactivation); and the second refuses to recognise my ftp set as being valid but is at best vague about what might be wrong (although the other plugin seemed happy).

So why the fuck isn’t there a built in WP upgrade system? The plugin upgrader is getting there (why it goes to a new window and doesn’t use AJAXy goodness I dont understand) so bits are in place there somewhere.

Updating WP-Adminstrip
Flickr.

Note WP-Adminstrip’s natty new OS Xish semi-transparent black background.

Still working on it, and I’d ideally like some sort of pop up semi-transparent div for quick posting from the adminstrip similarly to the excellent Tumblr posting system, also quick editing of comments etc all from the adminstrip.

Inspired by the tumblr.com's bookmarklet which allows users to quickly and easily post to their Tumblr blog, This plugin allows you to quickly post text, images, photos, quotes, and videos to your Wordpress implementation.

-  QuickPost Wordpress Plugin

Eli Horne has compiled a list of his 10 mission critical wordpress plugins which mentions my very own Nice Related Posts (a mod of another plugin). I gave a few of them a go: Wordpress Reports gives easy access to Google Analytics and Feedburner stats in WordPress; Flickr Photo Gallery seems quite useful but for me at least incompatible with the more critical UTW; WP Cache, I used an older version of some sort of WordPress cache plugin a while a go and had problems with it but I’m trying this version.

Ill try and add a few to his list: Also mine, WP Admin Strip for all your quick admin access which Brendan is now updating and Instant Upgrade for one click WordPress upgrades.

I had a play with Admin Strip recently and sent Brendan the update. Amongst a few minor but I think useful UI tweaks it now has the option for quick access to your Mint stats and it will hide the Moderate Comments and Akismet links if there are no comments to moderate or no spam in Aksimet’s list. You can get it here.
Here’s a screengrab.

This neat plugin serves up an iPhone friendly theme to those browsing from an iPhone. You can even test it on a Mac with iPhoney.

I found ember in my referrers (I use Mint), a very nice variation on Mallow - my old WordPress theme.

Shock Mallow update;

1.59, 22-6-7 - Nominal update for possible WP2.2 compatibility
- adding <?php wp_footer(); ?> to footer.php.

I’m also testing Mallow2.

Ive started making preparations for the successor to my previous Wordpress theme, Mallow - cunningly named Mallow 2.

Mt Blanc for K2
Image on Flickr

I have made a style for the K2 WordPress theme based of the look of my current site, Blanc. In a fit of originality I’ve dubbed it Mt Blanc, you get it?

It’s my first style for K2 and is heavily based on the bundled ‘vader’ style. It likely has a few bugs, leave notes on this post and I’ll update it.

Download Mt Blanc

Installation, chuck it in “wp-content/themes/k2/styles/mtblanc” and activate in the K2 control panel.

Brendan has updated the WordPress admin strip plugin.

I have updated the plugin admin strip two, sporting full support for wordpress 2.1.x and 2.2, along with added support for UTW, which, if detected, adds the current tag count and a handy link to the tags. #

Following closely on the tail of the first giveaway - here is my second theme giveaway of most of my previous designs. This was an inverted version.

As before, note that these are given away as-is, or Caveat emptor. I offer no support for these and no promise that they will work in your system, though they should do. I have removed all my personal information, links and images so you will have to do some initial digging around in the code to put in your information but it should be fairly clear.

If you do decide to use the design or elements of it please credit me. You can redistribute it with credits to me, but not commercially.

Once again, please enjoy my very messy code and download it from here. More is planned so keep an eye out.

I have been experimenting. No idea what this is good for but there you go.

As promised I’m giving away WordPress theme folders for most of my previous designs. For starters here is the one cunningly dubbed “sflwa-sept06”. This is the pinnacle of a design I started about a year and a half ago and has evolved gradually to what I’m giving away here.

Now, note that these are given away as-is, or Caveat emptor. I offer no support for these and no promise that they will work in your system, though they should do. If you do decide to use the design or elements of it please credit me. You can redistribute it with credits to me, but not commercially.

That said, enjoy my very messy code and download it from here. I hope to upload some more theme folders over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out.

I won’t say any more initially, just have a wander around. Leave a comment if anything’s broken or even email me. I have a little surprise planned to go with ‘blanc’ but hopefully it won’t take me quite as long as blanc has. I shall also start gathering up my old designs for those who would like the raw (slightly preened) files.

sflwa-18-3-7 blanc-18-3-7 And this design never made it Blanc faliure

John Gruber on Joe Trotter’s “God I Hate Wordpress” article. “I’ve never seriously investigated WordPress, but I’m nearly certain that if I wanted to, I could switch Daring Fireball from Movable Type to WordPress without changing the design at all.” No doubt. Remember kids, the software behind the blog is just a tool.

I plan to update this page frequently

I mentioned I’d been work on Blanc, my site’s new design now for about a month so I thought it was time to keep a page with it’s current status. Im still planning on giving away my current site’s WordPress theme styles when Blanc is done. AND another little surprise is planned but not entirely confirmed yet, I’ll see how I go.

I’m quite excited about this design but I want to make it right. I have also gone down some certain design routes with it then had an idea for an alternative way of doing it and so to some degree scrapped the last design. Most of the last month or so has also been purely on the home page, trying different layouts and colours, making sure I still liked it the next morning, pressing the delete key alot, not and seeking ideas. There was no use of Photoshop (CS3 beta o_O) for layouts - just an idea in my head and diving into CSSEdit 2 for CSS, TextWrangler for code and Cyberduck for ftp. Only in the last 1-2 weeks have I endeavoured to tackle any more pages and the majority of those 1-2 weeks was the single post page. The Stickies widget in Dashboard has been a useful place to save little to-dos so I remember my ideas.

 (more…)

Oh wow, my god, how did I miss this? Seems it’s time to avoid upgrading WordPress again as it has managed to reach the heady heights of 2.1 without really progressing since 1.5. I am (as of writing this) on 2.0.5, a full 0.0.2 versions behind the previous bleeding edge of 2.0.7, the latest version before they rolled it on to 2.1. I’m sure it’s not just me who can’t stand the rigmarole of upgrading WordPress and having to fish in the folders on your server making sure you don’t replace some sort of important file. Roll on Habari. PS. I see there is no longer a WP 2.0.7 upgrade downloadable so it seems my next step has to be 2.1 (luckily it seems fine on my localhost).

This new theme from the ground up game is harder than it looks. I currently have the home page sorted (though Im looking at ways of spicing it up a bit) and Im working on the single post page. It’s certainly interesting and pretty frustrating too - I’m torn between getting it done and sticking it up or taking my time to get it right and test it thoroughly, fix as much css/html as I can and ensure I have all the feature I want before activating it. Im trying to force myself into the later. Possibly Interesting to note too that I’m seriously considering releasing this new theme (or maybe a simplified, tweaked version) as a publicly available theme. The final theme will be far to complicated to release but a paired down one should be ok. If anyone wants the current theme or any of my previous ones released to the ‘as is’ then contact me via the About page and Ill think about it.

Im currently working on a new, simpler layout called “Blanc”. It’s a radical move away from the current layout and as such It may or may not see the light of day, but I like what Ive done on it so far. BTW, This is all but a rewrite from the ground up, all new css and all the template pages freshly created. As such it may take a while and may well collapse in on it’s self when I activate it.

wp-slimstat, track your blog. Neat little WordPress mint-a-like stats tracker. Note this though. Ive posted a grab showing my custom CSS.

Some of you may be wondering what digital voodoo it is that I’ve been employing to create those wonderful date contextual messages you see under the navigation just like that seen above. Well wonder no more brave digital pioneer, I shall put an end to your head scratching wonderment.

Firstly, choose yourself a date and secondly choose yourself a message for that very special date you just chose.

Here’s one I made earlier:

<?php
$specialday = (date(‘md’)==’1222’);
if($specialday) { ?>
<p>What a special day this is!</p>
<?php } ?>

Where ‘1222’ is the date (22nd of December in this case) and ‘What a special day this is!’ is your message. If you have a specific year in mind change ‘md’ to ‘mdy’ and and the year on the end of ‘1222’ - so ‘122206’ is this year.

That’s all, enjoy this simple yet fun tweakage.

As you will see (if youre not reading this via RSS, if you are - pop on over) Ive tweaked my site again.
